About Us
We are a recently established charitable company set up to replace The Erasmus Wilson Dermatological Research Fund, which was founded by consultant dermatologist, Dr Darrell Wilkinson, some 40 years ago. Our main objective is to support first class medical research into cancer and skin disease.
Although based within, and working closely with, the Dermatology Department at Amersham Hospital, we are independent of the NHS and entirely self-supporting.
What we do
In recent years, we have donated funds for capital projects at Amersham Hospital including:-
- the building and equipping of a dermatology research laboratory
- the provision of a specialist dermatology library and meeting room
We also provide long term support for a small research team engaged in academic research (our research), and, in addition:-
- support visiting doctors wishing to extend their postgraduate education in dermatology
- fund postgraduate students undertaking higher degrees in research
- purchase and donate specialist dermatological equipment
- support medical staff attending educational courses and meetings
How we raise funds
Funds are raised through a combination of research grants awarded by public bodies and charities, and clinical trials carried out in collaboration with industry.
We are now also actively seeking donations from the general public and institutions so that we can continue and develop our new project on canine olfactory detection of cancer.
Our Trustees
Our Board of Trustees is led by Chairman, Mr Ian Mathieson, a former non-executive director of South Buckinghamshire NHS Trust. Half of the board members are lay people who bring extensive experience in finance and management to the charity, whilst the remainder are senior hospital consultants from several specialties, including dermatology.
