Future Aims
Our study on bladder cancer has demonstrated that it is possible to train dogs to detect cancer on the basis of its smell. However, the work is very much in its infancy and a lot more needs to be done if dogs are to make a contribution in the field of cancer.

Building on what we have learnt so far, we would like to have the opportunity to:-
  • improve the success rate of the dogs in recognising bladder cancer. We need to see which dogs have the best olfactory abilities for this task and to optimise the way we prepare the urine samples and use them for training.
  • study dogs’ abilities to detect other types of cancer, most notably skin cancer
  • identify the chemical compounds which the dogs are recognising as being characteristic of cancer
In order to achieve these aims, we need to raise further research funds. If you would like to make a contribution, please visit our donations page.
